Those pesky release clauses, they have caused Newcastle no end of trouble with regard to Demba Ba.
The Newcastle striker has been the subject of unrelenting speculation since his release clause was revealed in January, and Spurs boss Harry Redknapp unhelpfully declared it was under £10 million.
It has been a bit of a miracle that Newcastle have been able to hold onto the striker considering, but speaks volumes about the club, and the job Alan Pardew is doing, that he has been able to convince the Senegalese hitman to stay despite the constant speculation.
At one stage it appeared likely the club would lose him to Galatasaray, but Pardew and Newcastle quickly weathered that storm, and Ba has gone onto score for fun once again in the Premier League this season.
It shouldn't be forgotten, that amid all the headache of the clause - A similar contractual clause actually enabled Newcastle to pick him up on a free transfer in the first place.
Ba signed for West Ham in January 2011, but their relegation saw a contract clause activated which allowed him to move on for free.
Newcastle were the lucky beneficiaries and West Ham were left cursing watching the striker rattle in the goals last season and this.
It is being claimed that midfielder Mohamed Diame, signed on a free this summer, has a £7 million release clause in his Hammers contract.
Diame was particularly impressive at St James Park on Sunday, winning 100 per cent of his aerial battles and making eight tackles, more than any other player on the pitch.
The midfielder would certainly be good foil for Cheik Tiote, and Mike Ashley and Alan Pardew may be left feeling they missed a trick in the summer.
The report claims Newcastle and Everton are interested, and this is certainly one to watch heading into January.
It all hinges on the release clause figure actually being true - Often these things are misreported in the papers - Otherwise West Ham would never agree to a sale, and Newcastle would never overpay, but £7 million might just suit the Toon, if they could convince the player to make the move.
What do you think, would Diame be a good signing for Newcastle at that price? What do you think of the report?
