Liverpool have again been heavily linked with signing Ivorian striker Lacina Traore.
Are there any Liverpool fans out there getting a sense of Deja Vu?
Lacina Traore is the second striker the Reds were linked in connection with a January switch, who was a reported target for them in the summer.
Traore was signed by rich Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala in the summer, where he has scored 11 in 19 appearances.
The player was linked with signing for Liverpool prior to his £15 million July switch from Kuban Krasnodar, and it seems unlikely the Reds would try to sign him for an even more inflated price now.
The situation is similar to that of Jackson Martinez, who they could have brought for £7 million in the summer, who signed for Porto and was last month reported to be a £15 million target for Liverpool.
Sooner or later Liverpool are going to have to take the plunge on one of their perhaps unproven striker targets for a lower price, otherwise they will be left with the current scenario.
ITV have today reported that Liverpool are in talks with Anzhi over signing Traore, with their source quoted as the Russia media - Although we have to say we remain sceptical.
Here are two questions which spring to mind...
Anzhi want to make a profit if they sell, so do Liverpool have £20 million to spend on a striker? Is Traore the best option for that price?
The answer to both questions is probably no.
We do expect Liverpool to sign a striker in January, Fernando Llorente should really be their top target, and he would come far cheaper, if they can convince him to sign. Demba Ba is another, and the Reds could look to activate his buyout clause and sign him for under £8 million. Traore's international teammate Wilfried Bony has been linked - At half the cost.
The asking price for Traore is simply too high for the Reds, the striker is happy where he is, and has a contract with Anzhi until 2016.
This upcoming transfer window will certainly be a big best for FSG and the funds they have available, but we don't expect this Ivory Coast hitman to be wearing Liverpool colours in 2013.
Do you share our cynicism with regard to the Traore rumours?
