Arsenal's January spending spree - The five players that will not sign

Many names have been linked after it was revealed Wenger may have £35 million to spend in January but in the current circumstances players from Liverpool, Real Madrid, Napoli, Manchester City and Crystal Palace will not be arriving at The Emirates in the transfer window.

Whether you want to believe that Arsene Wenger is going to be given a big money ‘warchest’ to go on an extremely un-Wenger like ‘spending spree’ in January is one thing, however the one thing for sure is that they could do with more reinforcements arriving at the club. Fans will of course be praying this doesn’t mean signings on par with the arrivals of Andre Santos and Park Chu-Young making their way to The Emirates they will instead hope for big names to help propel Arsenal back into Champions League qualification contention.

The financial ramifications of not doing so would be huge so investing in some quality recruitment makes sense in order to gain a foothold once again but some of the names and prices being linked seem a little far-fetched even for the most staunch believer in football’s unpredictability.

Let’s have a look at them.

Edin Dzeko

The Manchester City striker has been linked by the Daily Mail as Wengers number one transfer target. The reluctant ‘super-sub’ has been in good goalscoring form this term but is struggling to usurp Tevez and Aguero from Mancini’s starting line-up. All the ingredients are there for a credible transfer rumour except City won’t want to sell, Arsenal wouldn’t want to pay the price-tag and he isn’t a Wenger player.

Wilfried Zaha

In an ideal world where football has not gone completely mad this could happen in January. The electric winger seems an astute signing for Arsenal and definitely would be a player to tantalise Wenger’s talent whiskers. But for £20 million! It is a ludicrous asking price and maybe for half of that The Gunners would be tempted but the price is too much, which is clearly a ‘hands-off’ tactic. I think it will work and Zaha won’t go anywhere for more than a £12million instalment package. If that is the case then sure Zaha could go to The Emirates.

Pepe Reina

Wenger wants a keeper; check. Wenger was once interested in Reina; check. Reina may be unhappy at Liverpool; check. Liverpool may need to sell; check. So why will this not happen? Reina two years ago maybe but now his talent is in rapid decline not only that but Liverpool cannot afford to sell him. With sparse keeper options Rodgers would be juggling with knives on fire with the Liverpool fans belief system if the Spaniard was let go. Be very surprised if it happened.

Edison Cavani

Arsenal could spend all their ‘warchest’ on one option in Uruguayan goal merchant Cavani. However that type of money does not get spent in one go at The Emirates. It probably should as there is little doubt the Napoli striker would score goals at The Emirates but let’s get real; can you see Wenger and co shelling out £35 million on one player?

Alvaro Morata

You can thank Spanish sources for this link but after Jose Mourinho made it clear he fought hard to keep the youngster who scored his first goal for Los Merengues this weekend at the club the summer just passed letting him move on would not make much sense.

Which of these players would you like to see? Should Arsenal spend £20 million on Wilfried Zaha?
