Arsenal in shock right-back link

Less than 24 hours after agreeing a new deal with Carl Jenkinson, Arsenal have been linked with signing another right-back.

Arsenal have today been linked with signing a player from Championship side Burnley; but it isn't the man you think - top scorer Charlie Austin, but a defender instead.

Instead the man they are said to be monitoring is young right-back Kieran Trippier. What can we tell you about him?

Here are five quick facts...

1) Trippier is 22 and began his career with Manchester City, where he was part of the FA Youth Cup winning side.

2) He was never given at chance at the Etihad, and didn't play a single competitive game for the side before being moved on earlier this year.

3) Trippier did enjoy two loan spells with Barnsley, before another with Burnley, where he impressed so much that the club signed him permanently midway through his loan deal, in January of this year.

4) Despite his lack of Premier League experience, Trippier has racked up more than 100 appearances to date in his career so far, making 18 for Burnley so far this season, with the side sitting 13th in the Championship.

5) Trippier is an England youth international, featuring all the way through from under-18s to under-21s.

Analysis: While Carl Jenkinson appears very much the future at Arsenal, question marks hover over French defender Bacary Sagna, who has been linked with a summer move to Inter Milan.

With this in mind, Arsenal would be wise to consider their options in the position, and Trippier would be decent cover for Jenkinson. The young Englishman was a victim of circumstance at City, trying to breakthrough in the Sheikh Mansour era, and he has done well to carve a career for himself elsewhere.

He fits the bill for the sort of player Arsenal would need to cover for Jenkinson, young and talented, and his time with England's youth teams gives hope he can one day make the senior squad, but he too needs a big move to do so.

Newcastle are also keeping an eye on Trippier as cover with Danny Simpson's contract up this summer, so Arsenal may do well to secure him in January, and the good news is they could likely snap him up for under £5 million.

Is Trippier worth Arsenal taking a punt on?
