Which of the bottom five already in a Premier League relegation battle?

QPR Mascot And Fans

QPR, Southampton, Reading, Aston Villa, and Sunderland occupy the league's bottom five positions after 11 games.

Another weekend of Premier League action has passed and three fewer points are available for each club. Who is in trouble and what shape are they in?

Queens Park Rangers

QPR are still very much rooted to the bottom of the table and in search of their first win. They lost over the weekend away at Stoke City and badly need to start turning those defeats into draws and draws into wins. The stats show that QPR are struggling defensively both home and away and only three other clubs in the league have conceded more goals than Mark Hughes’ men.

Are they in a Premier League relegation battle? Yes

The Saints are one place above QPR in 19th place. They drew 1-1 at home with Swansea City producing a performance that would have encouraged Nigel Adkins. Any sort of clean sheet in any game will be a massive boost for the club because they have the worst defensive record in the league having conceded 29 goals accumulatively. Their attacking talent suggests they should be safe if they can concede fewer goals.

Reading have a game in hand on the two clubs below them but they missed a great opportunity to pull themselves closer to 17th place as they drew 0-0 at home against Norwich City. The problem for Reading has been draws, they are drawing 60% of their games at the moment. The defence has been fairly solid as they have only conceded one more goal both home and away than Manchester United. Reading are the best placed team in the bottom three.

Aston Villa

Aston Villa are standing on the very edge of those bottom three places. Paul Lambert will have been encouraged by the way the club played in the weekend defeat at home to Manchester United. The problem for Villa seems to have been scoring goals away from home. They have scored just three goals on the road which is the joint worst record along with Norwich City. Villa need to start hitting some consistency which will allow them to pull clear of the pack.

Are they in a Premier League relegation battle? Maybe

Sunderland have a game in hand which will take them up to 14th place if they win it. They lost 2-1 away at Everton over the weekend and are still on the hunt for their first away win of the season. The stats suggest they have been a little unlucky as defensively at home there is no better side in the league and they have scored the same number of goals away as West Ham United up in sixth place.
