Former Chelsea striker bags Champions League hattrick as two more ex-players net

Claudio Pizarro

Former Chelsea striker Claudio Pizarro netted a hattrick for Bayern Munich last night as they demolished Lille 6-1.

A strike record of 2 in 21 games is the sort of form which sees a new signing enter 'flop' territory, and it was enough to see Chelsea give up on Claudio Pizarro after just one season at Stamford Bridge, loaning him back to Germany before selling him in 2009.

His form in the Bundlesliga prior to his Chelsea move and after it has been quite outstanding, in the year Chelsea loaned him to Werder Bremen he struck 28 goals.

He is the record foreign scorer in German football history, and the Peruvian this summer signed as a free agent with Bayern Munich.

At the age of 34, he has still got it, as he showed last night with a clinical hattrick in Bayern's 6-1 demolition of Eden Hazard's former club Lille.

It's pretty fair to sum up his time at the Blues as unfortunate. He was signed by Mourinho in 2007 who was sacked weeks later, and Avram Grant failed to take a liking to him. With Didier Drogba the tried and tested main man, Pizarro never got the opportunities he felt he deserved, with most of his appearances coming off the bench.

Now playing for the side who Chelsea beat in last year's Champions League Final, he is hoping for one last hurrah. As a proven alternative to Mario Gomez, it was a shrewd deal for Bayern, who saw the rewards last night.

The game was notable for Chelsea fans for goals from two other former players who got on the scoresheet. For Bayern there was Arjen Robben who netted the game's second, while for Lille there was a goal for Salomon Kalou.

While Chelsea fans were nervously sitting on the edge of their seats in the end-to-end Shakhtar game, this is one they could have missed. It's well worth keeping an eye out for the highlights of.
