Why Chelsea's Daniel Sturridge has a realistic chance of playing abroad

Hamburg Fans - Hamburger SV

The forward, whose contract expires in the summer has been linked with Tottenham, Arsenal and Liverpool in the Premier League; but could he follow former England under-21 and Chelsea team-mate Michael Mancienne to the Bundesliga with Hamburg SV?

It has been an argument in recent English footballing history that not enough blood from these shores gives it a go across the channel. At the moment David Bentley is playing in Russia and Eric Dier, a young talented centre back is in the youth set-up of Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon.

Steve McManaman, David Beckham, Jonathan Woodgate and Michael Owen have all played for Real Madrid in modern times with varying degrees of success. There is a longer list then you actually think but the tedious link I am plugging at this point is Michael Mancienne, the talented centre-back having a renaissance season with German side Hamburg SV.

Could a former Chelsea team-mate be about to join him?

Daniel Sturridge has been linked with several clubs over the last week as it became apparent he had rejected a one-year-extension to his Chelsea contract, which expires in June. While several other big names have been mentioned such as Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool in the chase for his signature could Sturridge make the plunge in the Bundesliga?

He wouldn’t be the first England international forward to play for the club as Kevin Keegan is still revered at the Northern club for his exploits during a three-year-stint in Germany. While Sturridge still has a long way to go before being compared to the Liverpool legend he has precocious talent and the German league is a great place to advance his game.

Sure they don’t have the stars of the Premier League but the technical aspect of the game over there would really improve his game. Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen are among the teams playing excellent football at this present moment and the money is also there, with Schalke 04 one of the richest clubs in the world. Add to this the best average attendance figures in the whole of Europe the Bundesliga should not be looked down on as a force, it may have even surpassed Italy’s Serie A into third place behind La Liga and our very own Premiership in terms of footballing ability.

But why Hamburg?

Well just through the links he would have at the club. When his contract expired at Manchester City it was Hamburg’s current Technical Director Frank Arnesen who recommended him to the London club during his time as Sporting Director at Stamford Bridge.

He has already brought Mancienne, Gokhan Torre, Slobodan Rajkovic, Jacopo Sala and Jeffrey Bruma to the continent; could he tempt Daniel Sturridge into a radical career shake-up?

What are your thoughts? Could Daniel Sturridge benefit from playing with Hamburg in the Bundesliga?
