Five Premier League casualties from the international break

Fabio Borini

Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal and possibly Chelsea may be at the detriment of injury problems picked up during the recent leg of international fixtures.

The international break always brings around a series of injuries for the Premier League clubs, ask Newcastle United who are still without Tim Krul after he picked up an injury for The Netherlands in September. However which clubs could have been dealt casualties ahead of the weekends fixtures, including a little twist.

Pepe Reina

There may have been some question marks over the Spaniard this season but he still appears to be the best that Liverpool have on offer with Brad Jones and Peter Gulacsi the only viable options for Brendan Rodgers. The former Villarreal stopper picked up a knock during the warm-up for the France game and Liverpool fans will hope it is not too serious.

Fabio Borini

Ouch! The bone fracture in the Italian’s foot sounds particulary painful and leaves him out for a sustained period. He may not be finding the net but he has been regular starter under Rodgers and given The Reds striker shortage a lot now lies on the insurance of Luis Suarez remaining fit.

David Silva

Spain had a rotten week for injuries and Manchester City will be disappointed that the midfield wizard was forced off after 10 minutes against France on Tuesday night. Although the injury is not serious, and City have plenty of options in reserve, Roberto Mancini would not have wanted one of his star-men picking up an injury while away on international duty.

Theo Walcott

The whole nation winced in unison when the Arsenal winger came into contact with San Marino’s goalkeeper at full tilt. The sheer velocity looked heart-stopping so Theo will likely be grateful to come out of the incident with a painful bruised lung and nothing worse. He may be sitting on the bench more then not at The Emirates so far this season but Arsene Wenger would still want his pace as an option for the next few weeks the 23-year-old reportedly needs to recuperate.

Ashley Cole?

An odd one but Chelsea could maybe lose Cole in January by association. Real Madrid have lost all three of their main left-back options during the international break. Marcelo is out until January at least and Alvaro Arbeloa and Fabio Coentrao also picked up worrying knocks during the international break. Jose Mourinho is reportedly interested in bringing in Cole when his contract runs out in the summer but if the injury problems continue he might make an earlier switch for the England international.

It’s unlikely but, stranger things have happened in football.

Which of these five is the biggest loss?
