The Tottenham and Liverpool target who one player knows very well

Dries Mertens

Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool have both been linked with Belgian winger Dries Mertens, a man who a certain Chelsea defender won't relish being reminded of.

Gary Cahill was last season viewed as England's luckiest footballer. He jumped ship from relegation bound Bolton in January to Chelsea.

While his former Trotters teammates are now languishing in 18th place in the Championship, Cahill is a Champions League and FA Cup winner, playing a key part in keeping a clean sheet against Bayern in the final.

That run of good fortune came to an abrupt end in a warm-up game for England, when he was pushed into Joe Hart, a collision which resulted in the defender sustaining a broken jaw.

It ruled him out of Euro 2012 where he would have been in contention for a starter's spot alongside club mate John Terry.

The man responsible for that needless shove? Belgium's Dries Mertens.

At the time he said: "I feel for him. If that was me in his place, getting injured like that a week before the Euros, I'd feel so bad. I'd feel terrible. I'm sorry he's not able to go."

We are re-visiting this because Mertens has now been linked with a move to the Premier League. He is a reported target for both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

The winger is currently in terrific form, he has four goals in eight Eredivisie games this season for PSV, and one in two Europa League games.

At 25 he is reported to be available for around £12 million, a potential bargain when you consider his international teammate Eden Hazard cost £32 million.

While Spurs already have wing wizards Bale and Lennon in the ranks, it may be that Liverpool would be the most logical destination for him if it were regular football he craved, especially with Stewart Downing out of favour and expected to be moved on.

He would certainly be one opponent Chelsea's Cahill wouldn't relish seeing in a hurry.
