Tottenham Hotspur latest: Including Lloris and Mertens

White Hart Lane 4

News, views, and gossip relating to Tottenham over the last 24 hours.

All is well at White Hart Lane, after a mixed summer, and a frantic transfer window, the win over Aston Villa this weekend displayed a confident team, one certainly not in  turmoil as was suggested little more than a week ago. Hugo Lloris kept goal at the weekend, ending Brad Friedel's Premier League record 310 game appearance streak, which dated back to 2004.

The Frenchman, playing his second game of the week, has said he is glad to get started in the Premier League. He dispelled rumours of his initial frustration, and told L'Equipe: "Everything with Brad Friedel, the goalkeeping coach and even the manager, has gone off smoothly."

He is though no means assured of the number one spot, with Andre Villas-Boas bluntly asking the question of whether the goalkeeper was now his first choice, with "No," Before elaborating that it was a 'logical' decision, that Lloris cannot play just Europa League games. Following on from this, we ask today if Spurs fans can expect continual rotation in the same way Manchester United are operating at present, and look at the pro's and con's.

The club's next game is against Chelsea, after the international break, taking place at White Hart Lane, and it is a match Andre Villas-Boas says he is determined to win, and has his sights firmly set on ending the league leaders' unbeaten run. Blues defender Branislav Ivanovic has already expressed his concern at the clash, describing the fixture as 'very tough', especially considering the timing of the break.

It is also already being speculated that American stopper Brad Friedel will be recalled for the fixture ahead of Lloris.

Spurs have been linked with a January transfer swoop for PSV winger Dries Mertens. The Belgian has scored 25 goals in 38 games for the Dutch side, and has a release fee of 13 million Euros.

Tottenham's on-loan midfielder Jermaine Jenas had a goal ruled out at the weekend for Nottingham Forest, as he attempts to rebuild his career after injury and a lack of playing time. The official Spurs website includes a full report on loanees including young goalkeeper Jordan Archer.
