Arsenal latest: Including Gibbs and Giroud

Kieran Gibbs

News and gossip from Arsenal in the past 24 hours and the weekend.

Arsene Wenger got one over old adversary Sam Allardyce at Upton Park as Santi Cazorla orchestrated The Gunner’s 3-1 away triumph. Mohamed Diame had given The Hammers the lead after 20 minutes but just before half time Olivier Giroud bundled home his first Premier League goal. Arsenal dominated the game with Santi pulling the strings and in the 77th minute Theo Walcott slided home to give Arsenal a deserved lead. Santi then got reward for his incredible performance by curling a delightful effort past Jussi Jaaskelainen.

Kieran Gibbs has pulled out of the England squad for the upcoming fixtures with Poland and San Marino with a thigh injury. It will come as a bitter disappointment to the player who had worked hard to receive a call-up to the national side after an extended absence through injury and off the back of impressive performances at club level. Ryan Bertrand has been called in instead of the 20-year-old.

Arsene Wenger has compared summer signing Santi Cazorla to Glenn Hoddle. The Spanish wizard has won many plaudits for his performances so far this season and Wenger, who managed Hoddle at Monaco, said the pair’s ambi-dexterity is what makes them so similar.

Frenchman Olivier Giroud has insisted his new team have their sights set on the Premier League title despite currently sitting in seventh position in the Premier League table. He has warned teams against writing The Gunners off as they will play a significant role in this Premier League season.

Arsenal’s on loan midfielder Denilson has grabbed worldwide headlines after scoring an absolutely stunning goal for his on-loan club Sao Paulo. The strike, on the half volley from all of 35 yards would have Arsenal fans salivating with envy if the midfield of Arteta, Cazorla and co was not performing so well this season.

Arsenal are in under-21 action tonight and some important names are on the team sheet. Jack Wilshere, Emmanuel Frimpong and Bacary Sagna will all feature as they step up their respective recoveries. The impressive German youngster Serge Gnabry will also feature while the son of former Gunners legend Martin Keown, Niall, will play for Reading.

Arsenal have been sensationally linked with Colombian goal-machine Radamel Falcao of Athletico Madrid. The striker has been linked with all the world’s biggest clubs due to his sensational goalscoring form at Atletico Madrid but would cost Arsenal a humongous sum of money.

And finally Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has signed a lucrative deal with mobile communications network O2. The 19-year-old winger has become a popular figure with fans and media alike and recently starred in a TV advert for the brand. That association has now been made permanent for the England international.
