The Chilean star is the latest subject of the transfer rumours linking a host of central midfielders to Man Utd, and would be a superb signing if Ferguson could pull it off.
No-one knows for sure if the consensus amongst football journalists and fans that Manchester United need a central midfielder is an opinion also considered true in the Old Trafford dressing room.
There have been plenty of players linked with United, but a continuing failure to sign a box-to-box midfielder is either an indication that Ferguson does not believe he needs one, or that the club cannot afford the targets they covet.
Following his excellent performances for Juventus over the past year and a half, Arturo Vidal is the latest name linked to a move to Manchester, but a reported £40 million price tag may prove an unconquerable stumbling block.
Vidal is a tireless midfielder in a similar mould to Joao Moutinho, who has also been frequently linked to Man Utd. The Chilean was an integral part of the Juventus team that went unbeaten for the whole of last season's Serie A.
He has an undoubted combative streak that should serve him well if he does some to the Premiership, though he may pick up plenty of yellow cards. He would then bring an element of steel to United's midfield, which has looked a little lightweight at times this season.
Vidal is also an attacking threat, though not prolific he did manage seven goals in Serie A last season, and his ability to pick up the second ball in broken play high up the pitch can create dangerous situations for his team.
With Manchester City and Real Madrid also reportedly interested in midfielder, United could end up in a bidding war that could drive the price of Vidal up to ludicrous levels.
That said, a midfielder of his quality will never come cheap, and having decided against making decisive moves on a number of players they have been linked with in the past, like Modric, Moutinho, Sneijder and Witsel, United have seen two of these players end up moving elsewhere for very high fees.
If this area is somewhere Ferguson is looking to strengthen, then he may need to pay £30 million plus to bring in the very best. Vidal is an excellent player, and is only 25, he may just be the man that Man Utd should spend big money on.
If not Vidal, who would you want to join Manchester United's midfield?
