Should Manchester United add another Dutchman to their ranks?
It is often thought that once the transfer window shuts that all the rumours and gossip will dissipate, but nothing can be further from the truth as this stage of the season represents an opportunity for players to put themselves in the shop window and for clubs to do the talking that we all know goes on but just isn’t reported in the red-tops.
Agents are obviously the main link between the footballer and potential suitors and one agent has recently thrown one of his main clients into the transfer pool for the New Year as Kevin Strootman seems all set to leave PSV Eindhoven.
The 22-year-old is incredibly talented and has amassed 11 caps for the Dutch national side already and while he only moved to PSV last June he has no qualms about moving on after a short period of time as he proved with his six-month stint with fellow Eredivisie side FC Utrecht previously.
He is one of the new breeds of dynamic midfield players, with an exquisite range of passing and almost extra-terrestrial like vision; all of which is complimented by a biting tackle and ox-like strength. In many ways he is like Newcastle United’s Yohann Cabaye and like the Frenchman Manchester United are being extensively linked with his signature. While the name of Yann M’Vila in particular are constantly branded around the globe as a transfer target for Premier League clubs there is no doubt that the Dutchman is at the very least his equal on the football pitch.
According to the players agent, Chiel Dekker, PSV have agreed to let him leave the club if an appropriate offer comes in for his talents in January after he made his intentions of playing in one of Europe’s top leagues and the Champions League very clear.
A centre midfield player has been a long term target for Sir Alex as the worries over the long-term fitness of Darren Fletcher and Anderson continue not to mention the advancing age of Paul Scholes and even Michael Carrick, who at 31 will need replacing in the coming years.
Strootman was a viable option this summer but the £20million price-tag labelled on him by the Dutch side put many a suitor off but that seems to have diminished with various sources reporting a range of £10-15million as a more likely asking price. With the extra incentive of playing with international team-mates Robin Van Persie and Alexander Buttner at Old Trafford this deal increases in probability the more you think about it.
With Igor Denisov another option it may seem Manchester United will be more likely to do business in January, something they have avoided in recent years.
Here he is in action…
Would you like Manchester United to bring him in?
