Liverpool latest: Including Sterling and Del Piero

Raheem Sterling Liverpool

All the news and gossip relating to Liverpool FC in the past 24 hours.

A late deal to sign Alessandro Del Piero by Brendan Rodgers may have fell through out of the Juventus legend's respect to the Heysel disaster. Relations between the clubs have always remained since the 1985 disaster at the European Cup Final in Brussels. 39 Juventus fans were among the dead that day and Del Piero’s former agent Claudio Pasqualin believes the idea of moving to Liverpool as a ‘true Juventino’ would have proved too difficult for the former Old Lady Captain who eventually decided on a two year switch to Australia with Sydney FC.

Although despite Del Piero’s claims of a late Anfield bid officials at the club have gone on record to announce they never made an approach for the veteran Italian, contrary to many reports.

Brendan Rodgers has won a mini battle with the FA over the potential involvement of Raheem Sterling with the England Under 21 side. It was originally thought the 17 year old would be included in Stuart Pearce’s side for the match against Azerbaijan but Rodgers has insisted he is not thrown into the spotlight to soon as to protect him at such an early age. Instead Sterling will feature for England’s Under 19 side against Germany alongside team-mate Adam Morgan and against Liverpool’s new signing Samed Yesil.

Liverpool’s Spanish left back Jose Enrique has made it clear he is prepared to fight for a left back spot this season when speaking to the Liverpool Echo. Signed for £6million last summer from Newcastle the 26 year old has had an in and out start to his Liverpool career and had a mixed performance against Arsenal this weekend. With Jack Robinson pushing from the youth and reserves, Glen Johnson become adaptable to the left back position and Stewart Downing being earmarked for a positional change Enrique realises he has a lot of competition on his hands this season for the first team spot but insists he will fight for the spot seeing Jamie Carragher as an inspiration at the squad.

Liverpool have come under fire from Scotland Under 21 manager Billy Start today as an example of how Scottish youngsters can get swallowed up in the Premier League system. He cited the example of former Rangers defender Danny Wilson who has barely made an impact since arriving at Anfield from Ibrox and fears their development is being hindered as a result of such actions. He was speaking after Kilmarnock youngster Matthew Kennedy joined city rivals Everton on transfer deadline day.
