European transfer review: Including Van Der Wiel and Babel

Ryan Babel

Southampton, Chelsea, Newcastle, Arsenal, West Ham, Tottenham and Manchester City targets feature in a quick round-up of the continental deals on deadline day

With De Jong, Bendtner and Van Der Vaart on their way abroad and Javi Garcia, Maicon and Schurrle potentially coming to England, what is happening exclusively in Europe.

25-year-old Dutchman and former Liverpool player Ryan Babel has left Hoffenheim by mutual consent. He joined the German outfit just 18 months ago for £8million but has now been allowed to leave on a free transfer so he can discuss a potential move to a new club. The former Ajax player has been linked with Fiorentina, West Ham and Tottenham but with the Bundesliga deadline earlier and stricter than the rest of Europe a mutual cancellation seemed the only reasonable solution to see Babel leave the club and get his career back on track.

Another Dutchman on the move is Gregory Van Der Wiel, the Ajax defender has been linked with Chelsea, Newcastle and Arsenal but looks set to move to big spending Paris Saint Germain on a permanent deal.

Javier Saviola has left Benfica on a free transfer and signed for La Liga side Malaga. The Spanish outfit needed strikers after losing Salomon Rondon earlier in the window and the free transfer of the former Barcelona and Real Madrid striker seemed a perfect deal for the Champions League debutants.

Udinese have officially announced a deal to bring Andrea Lazzari from Fiorentina. The Italian becomes Fiorentina’s third big departure of the week with Matija Nastasic on his way to Manchester City and Juan Manuel Vargas signing for Serie A rivals Genoa. The move all but confirms that Stevan Jovetic will stay in Florence as La Viola chase Ryan Babel on a free transfer.

Ibrahim Afellay is set to cause Liverpool and Arsenal upset as he is set to agree a move to Schalke 04. Barcelona have been trying to offload the Dutchman this summer on loan as he is not a feature in Tito Villanova’s first team plans. Afellay will act as a replacement for Manuel Jurado, the Spaniard signing a similar deal with Russian side Spartak Moscow.

Lille have insisted that Mathieu Debuchy will not be signing for Real Madrid or Newcastle as he will stay with the Normandy side for this season. The French international was largely expected to sign for Newcastle earlier in the window and Real Madrid will now likely turn their attentions to Maicon for right back cover, attempting to fight off interest from Manchester City.

Despite interest from AC Milan, Inter, Juventus and Roma Giuseppe Rossi’s agent has confirmed that he will remain at Villarreal this season. The Spanish side will play in Segunda Liga this year but a knee injury makes a move almost impossible and Rossi is willing to wait until the January at least before returning to Italy.

Alessandro Del Piero however has signed for A-League side Sydney FC in a massive coup for Australian football. The Italian legend was a reported interest for Southampton but has now quashed all rumours by moving down under.

Otherwise Europe is quiet with once again the Premier League the pivot of the Transfer Window on deadline day so be sure to keep up to date with Here Is The City's live blog reporting all the latest Deadline Day deals as they happen until 11pm.
