Tottenham open NextGen campaign with 3-2 win over VfL Wolfsburg

White Hart Lane 5

Spurs have climbed to the top of Group One after fighting back from 1-0 down to conquer the Germans.

Tottenham Hotspur got their NextGen campaign off to a winning start last night after battling back from a half time deficit to win 3-2 in Germany.

Their opponents Wolfsburg took the lead in the first half after Phillip Hauck converted from the penalty spot in the 17th minute. Spurs were the team on top however with Alex Pritchard playing exceptionally well in the centre of midfield, consistently pulling the strings and attempting to find the incisive ball.

After finding their clinical edge during the halftime interval it was Shaquille Coulthirst, with one of his first touches, who found the net just after the hour mark. Spurs dominance told when 15 minutes later Souleymane Coulibaly’s strike rebounded into the path of substitute Ruben Lameiras, who coolly slotted the ball past the Wolfsburg stopper.

The moment of the game however came three minutes from time when man of the match Alex Pritchard effectively sealed victory in emphatic style with a wonderfully executed free kick from just outside the box to give Spurs a seemingly unassailable lead.

Despite Wolfsburg sneaking a late consolation goal courtesy of Julian Brandt it was not enough to stop the Lilywhites coming away from the Elsterweg Stadion with 3 points and therefore rising to the summit of Group One ahead of Barcelona and Anderlecht.

It was a deserved victory for Spurs who dominated the game from the off but they will be disappointed in the manner of the two goals conceded; nonetheless they will be very pleased with an away victory.
