A round-up of news and gossip relating to Chelsea over the past 24 hours.

Chelsea chief executive is said to have contacted Wigan chairman Dave Whelan last night in preparation of a new bid for forward Victor Moses. Wigan have lowered their asking price from £10m to £8.5m and the deal, as reported yesterday, could be completed before Chelsea’s Community Shield match against Manchester City on Sunday. The 21-year-old has a year remaining on his contract and has been urged to sign a new one at Wigan but it appears the Nigerian and former England Under-21 international favours a move to the London club.

Dave Whelan has confirmed to ESPN that discussions have taken place with Chelsea. He said: “I have spoken to Chelsea’s chief executive and they are easy to deal with. We have told them the price and they will come back and agree it or not. We would much prefer the player to sign a new contract and stay but he wants to go to Chelsea and it’s a good club so we cannot stand in his way.”

The Metro is reporting that Chelsea have been offered Porto’s wing-back Alvaro Pereira at a cut price. Andre Villas-Boas reportedly chased the player last summer but the club were repelled by Porto’s £30m asking fee but that figure has been halved, according to speculation. However, the 26-year-old Uruguayan plays primarily on the left and does not answer Chelsea’s needs at right-back.

Juan Mata and Oriol Romeu have returned to training with Chelsea following Spain’s elimination from the Olympic football tournament. It brings Chelsea closer to having a full complement of players with Ryan Bertrand and Daniel Sturridge due to return following England’s quarterfinal exit on penalties on Saturday. Only new signing Oscar is yet to train with the club as his participation in the Olympics continues today in Brazil’s semi-final match against South Korea.
