Here's some career advice for young bankers sent in by one of our readers.
'Welcome to the wonderful world of investment banking where its not 'what' you know, but 'who' you know, and whether you get on well with your immediate boss.
Being well educated and making the right moves are not factors that will make you stand out of the crowd, but are just minimum requirements to be able to attend the party, either as a guest or a waiter.
And for every one 'successful' banker / trader / salesperson, there are 500 wannabes who didn't get lucky. That's what Wall Street is all about - being lucky enough to be at the right place at the right time. Its a cliche, but it's oh so true.
Any young banker starting his / her career has time to potentially get that lucky break. In the meantime, earn a paycheck and maintain a positive attitude - however hard it may be. Hopefully, some well-placed senior professional will take enough of a liking to you to help you on your way. Oh, and don't forget to drink a lot - alcohol usually numbs the pain!'
