After a weekend of digging, chopping, and camping, a group of bankers have raised over £150,000 for Havens Hospices.
The sixth 'I'm a Banker - Get Me out of Here' event took place within the grounds of Little Havens Children's Hospice in Thundersley on the 27th and 28th February, organised by Roberto DeCristofano and close friend Steve Roebuck from Deutsche Bank.
Over 100 financial markets professionals took part and spent the day working on DIY and gardening projects at the hospice to raise much needed funds and awareness of the charity.
Roberto's wife, Sarah, expressed her gratitude and spoke of her family's experience at the closing ceremony on Sunday morning. Their daughter Lili, 9, has a rare degenerative brain disorder and they have been visiting Little Havens as a family for the past seven years. Sarah said:
'Every year, I think how I can possibly thank you all enough for the time you spend at this event and the money you raise. We feel so lucky to have Lili here, and even though her condition means she will deteriorate, through it all we are blessed. She's so happy. Little Havens has brought us so much comfort over the years and I have heard it described as a nice cup of hot chocolate and a cuddly blanket.
Nobody wants to be told their child needs to use a hospice, but when you overcome that, it really does become a lifeline'.
The tired bankers sipped their tea and coffee and indulged in bacon and sausage sandwiches as certificates of attendance and medals were presented to all who took part. Roberto and Steve revealed the grand total raised from through sponsorship and various fundraising initiatives such as dress down days, quizzes and sports events as a remarkable £158,712 bringing the running total from previous events to over £650,000 for the charity.
Havens Hospices Trustee, David Forster spoke after the total was announced and said: 'This is a fantastic sum and helps us to maintain, grow and develop our services for the families we care for. On behalf of the Trustees, staff and volunteers, thank you to all for participating. You have all taken a massive step in keeping the work of the charity moving forward'.
Bankers commented not only on the sense of community spirit and team bonding that took place, but on the fantastic organisation of the event making the sixth 'I'm a Banker' weekend a truly rewarding experience for all involved.
Havens Hospices provides respite breaks, symptom control and end-of-life care for adults and children living with serious illnesses or conditions. It aims to make their journey - and that of the family - as comfortable as possible, creating special memories along the way. This could not continue without kind donations as it costs £5.1 million each year to keep the hospices open.
