David Brent said in the UK comedy 'The Office' that you should never hire unlucky people. That's why, so the logic goes, you should throw half the cvs you receive from would-be candidates in the 'bin. Well, many years ago, that's what is said to have happened to outgoing HSBC chairman, Sir John Bond. Well, almost.
According to The Observer, Sir John's original work application, lodged over 45 years ago, was rejected. The man who would go on to become the bank's chairman (and one of its most successful hires ever!), apparently got a 'no thanks' letter from a silly banker (probably someone in Personnel).
The newspaper says that Bond was only hired by HSBC after the father-of-a friend intervened on his behalf. Thank God for good connections.
