The Daily Telegraph reports that a few weeks back a 'terrible stench' seemed to be wafting around parts of Lombard Street. And the finger was being pointed at Barclays Bank's plush offices there. Many of the locals apparently felt at the time that the bank was responsible for the rancid aroma.
And the newspaper reports that the bank has, in fact, a bit of previous - just a few months ago a rotten whiff was put down to a loose drain cover in the bank's grounds 'which led to a flood of raw sewage'.
The latest bout of unpleasantness was finally put down to the bank's drainage pipes. Apparently clogged up with grease and fat, the blocked pipes soon began to reek. Fortunately the matter has now been resolved, the neighbours have stopped complaining and the bank staff are said to be breathing more easily. So, it seems to be a case of all's well that ends smell!
